Why February Half Term Is the Perfect Time to Visit Deal with Kids

February half term can feel like a long week when you are at home with little ones. The weather is unpredictable, routines are off, and everyone needs a change of scenery. That is where Deal comes in.

Deal is an ideal place for a relaxed, family-friendly half term break. It’s walkable, welcoming, and full of simple activities that keep children happy without needing lots of planning.

Here’s why February half term in Deal works so well for families:

1. Castles That Feel Like an Adventure

Deal Castle and nearby Walmer Castle are brilliant for children. They are just the right size, full of winding passages and open spaces, and easy to explore without feeling overwhelming.

In February they’re quieter, which means kids can roam a little more freely, and parents can enjoy the history without crowds! Wrap up warm, explore the walls, then reward everyone with a hot chocolate afterwards.

2. Beach Time Without the Pressure

The beach in Deal is perfect for half term. There is no pressure to swim, no packed promenades, just space to run, collect stones, build towers, and breathe in fresh sea air.

A beach hang in Winter is low effort and high reward. Kids burn off energy, parents get a moment of calm, and everyone sleeps better afterwards. Grab coffee before you head to the beach from Hope & Lane.

3. Ice Cream Always Helps

No matter the season, ice cream is always a winner with kids! A stop at Deal’s sea front ice cream parlour is an easy way to lift spirits, especially after a blustery walk along the seafront. It turns an ordinary afternoon into something that feels like a treat.

4. Easy Day Trips That Feel Special

If you want to mix things up, there are great child-friendly outings nearby:

  • Dover climbing wall: perfect for older children who like to move and climb, and ideal for burning off half term energy (and if you don’t fancy climbing there’s a great swimming pool – just be prepared for how windy it is in the car park!).

  • The little cinema in Sandwich: a lovely, relaxed option for an afternoon film, especially if the weather turns. Sandwich itself is also great for wandering with children and feels like stepping into a storybook. Not to mention the pizza in The Drill Hall is amazing!

Both are close enough to feel easy, not exhausting, by train or by car.

5. Simple Food and Family Friendly Spots

Deal has plenty of places where children are welcome and parents do not feel rushed. Cafés are used to muddy boots and seaside layers (try Deal Pier Kitchen, or the Pop Up Café), and everything is close enough that you can pop back to the house if needed.

And for evenings, staying in can be the best option of all. Pick up easy food locally (fish and chips from Sea View on the front is great, and the pizza in Margherita’s is delish!), get the kids into pyjamas early, and enjoy a quiet night without needing to go anywhere. Don’t forget to grab yourselves a bottle of something delicious from Le Pinardier   🍷

6. A Comfortable Base Makes All the Difference

When travelling with children, where you stay really matters. The House in Deal offers space, comfort, and a calm place to land at the end of the day.

It’s close to the beach, close to everything you need, has plenty of games, toys, books and pencils & paper, and is designed to feel like a home rather than just somewhere to sleep. That makes half term feel like a break for parents too.

We had a lovely 3 night stay over the half term with our 2 kids, aged 6 and 4. The house was spotless, the kitchen was incredibly well stocked – felt like a home away from home – and there was a big chest full of board games for the family. There were even some bath toys for the kids which they loved.

My youngest said he wanted to stay in the house forever because it was ‘beautiful’! A great base for exploring Deal and the Kent coastline. Thanks for having us Suze!
